DinkEdit vs WinDinkEdit vs WinDinkEdit plus
Windinkedit+. Dinkedit cannot be used with a mouse, and all the keys are cryptic, and I never used Windinkedit. Overall, + is better in all ways because it has more features, and also has a more appealing interface.
FreeDinkEdit. It doesn't crash all the time and it's a lot faster than the others if you know the right keys.
I agree, DinkEdit or FreeDinkEdit; much faster with the keys.
I will only use DinkEdit.
The only times I've ever used WinDinkEdit have been when I've needed/wanted to delete screens, or to copy them across from another file.

WinDinkEdit+.
DinkEdit is good but once you learn WinDinkEdit, you'll cry bloodtears for why you've never used WDE+ before. WinDinkEdit has really no point at all. It's just an older version of +.
FreeDinkEdit is kinda useless imho too. It's just for those who have to get a crappy computer or a system for it.

I'm pleasantly surprised so many people have mentioned Dinkedit so far, though I fear the popular opinion will be for WDE/WDE+. That, of course, does not mean Dinkedit is not the best. =)
Windinkedit
* Multiple screen view
* Easier to learn
* Doesn't look as "DOS-like"
Dinkedit
* Painting tiles and hardness is much, much faster
* Can place sprites pixel-accurately on the screen
* Does not crash randomly

WDE+ is an updated version of WDE so that'll be better, though I think it missed out a minor feature or two of WDE.
Between DinkEdit and WDE+ it really just comes down to personal preference.
DinkEdit uses the keyboard and can be quicker but has a steeper learning curve (eg, memorising the keys) whereas WDE+ is much more intuitive, easier to learn and mainly uses the mouse.
I use WDE+, never really tried DE properly.

I don't trust WDE+. It's still WDE for me. Call me old-fashioned if you like.
WinDinkEdit has never crashed for me, ever. So, I'll go with DinkEdit.
Back when I still mapped (umm, that was before WDE+, I don't even know about that editor...), I never had WDE crash on me. I occasionally used DE for modifying dink.ini, and pixel-precise placement, without having to know the coordinates, but WDE for everything else.
A feature I find missing in DE is "Quit without saving". Oh, the maps I have ruined...
EDIT: okay, that's an exaggeration. But I often couldn't resist looking at the main game's map, moving around some stuff, only to learn that change is permanent. Sure, you could kill the program using a task/process manager, but that kinda feels dirty

You only like buggy software? XD
Edit: Not that DE is buggy. I wouldn't know. It's just funny the way you said it.

Developing in WDE/WDE+ is much faster than with DinkEdit, may that be browsing or decorating. I don't like DinkEdit at all actually, whenever I start it I feel the urge to close it down at once... But it's handy when it come to hardboxing.
I used to use DinkEdit for everything, but when I returned here after my years of abscence, I couldn't get into it anymore. I also never play full screen anymore, I think both of these go hand in hand. In WDE+ it's easier to see exactly how my map will look ingame. Also, browsing sprites is much easier, also due to window resolution.
I happen to also like the sprite library for power ups. The only thing I don't like about WDE+ is that sometimes I can't reach a sprite anymore by clicking it.

So What I'm getting from this is that Dinkedit is better for more advanced D-Mod makers but WinDinkEdit is better for the general population?
I wouldn't say that. WinDinkEdit is easier to learn for sure, but that doesn't mean it lacks the power to make advanced DMODs. Great DMODs such as initiation and pilgrim's quest were made using WinDinkEdit. In the end it remains a matter of personal preference. For example I like to use WinDinkEdit for every part of map making, but I prefer DinkEdit for editing hardboxes.
It really seems to me DinkEdit is just falsely getting praised of it's hardbox editing, which isn't that much better than in WDE at all. Guess both editors are really on top of their game, for those who know how to use them the right ways.
DinkEdit sure was the best freeware game editor of its' time.
