The Dink Network

About the rejection of dmods

Well, I don't feel like writing an email, so I ask here, how was it with the dmod-takeoff? Were authors still given the right to remove their dmods from the Dink Network? My apologies, but I really can't remember.

We handle this on a case by case basis. If a d-mod really isn't worth anything, and the author wants it off, we will do so, but if Gary Hertel came to us and ordered us to take off Prophecy of the Anchients, we wouldn't. Sure, that sounds wrong, but we look at it based on the inpact it would have on the community. When authors released d-mods, they are released, public domain, and we choose to host them here. They can ask us not to mirror their file, but when they released it as freeware, we have the right to say no and keep it up on our site.

If the author do not want to have a file in this community you can not ignore him/her and keep the file.

I actually agree with you IvanMZ.. but I think they can keep it anyway, cuz:

1. The copyright: The user may have the copyright. If an author says "I don't want it distributed anymore", people would have to follow that, usually... but..
2. End User License Agreement: Most dmod authors does not write an EULA. If you look in most EULAs, they say that you have to agree to it to use the product. It usually also says that if the author don't want the thing distributed anymore, all users who have the thing has to delete their copy when the author terminates the license. But, since an EULA isn't distributed, that won't happen. At least I think it works that way. (What else would be the use of the EULA? )

If Gary Hertel asked us to remove POTA, we would surely do that. It's not up to WC to decide these things

That's right. Not doing so will certainly go in against the principles of most authors. And, it's the authors who release d-mods. So, if you don't want authors to release d-mods anymore, then keep them. I'll tell you this though : no new d-mods = no community.

Of course not. That would be stealing.
