The walkthrough says the Bonca will tell you an easier way to get candles but that dialog never comes up for me.

Dink must have visited the local pillbug hunter and stated that he is too honorable to slay the bonca. If Dink has done so, then when Dink enters his cave, the bonca will say:

"If you would you like me to tell you where a stash of Magic Candles can be found... then come closer so we can chat."
].
When Dink comes closer to chat, and Dink HAS NOT agreed to slay the bonca in his conversation with the pill bug hunter AND Dink has the magic amulet on his person, the bonca will tell him about where to get the Magic Candles. Otherwise, the instructions the bonca could give him will do no good. So the bonca will say:

"I'm afraid I can do little to help you until you posess the magic amulet. I think that someone in town possesses it."
].
