ATTENTION, ATTENTION:

I was able to get my hands on a beta2 copy of Windows Vista, the NEW OS replacing XP(due out next year I believe) ans was playing Dink. AWESOME graphics! Just have to make sure that you run it in with true color checked, otherwise you are running around in a rainbow.

Just thought you might like to know.

Any fool can use a computer. Many do.
Red is red, green is green and blue is still blue I assume? So it should still look the same right?

It has some flashy useless 3D effects and the like, I think. But requirements on the OS are WAY too high, at least for an OS.

Heh, Microsoft farts out yet another turd even more bloated useless crap... this time, fancy graphics and security features designed to protect Microsoft, not you.

I use Linux with KDE myself. Flashy enough, and only 80 MB of RAM in use after fresh startup. Exactly how I like my OS.

Well, you can have both at the same time... especially if you're sick.

Ew.

I tried installing a lot of Linux distros, but I always have an error here or there. SuSE 9.1 works well but is too old. Will try installing Morphix again later.

Then there's Windows 98, because XP didn't work on my computer anymore due to weird serial issues.

Isn't it true that Vista will completely eliminate support for OpenGL? If that is true, there's no way in hell I'm ever using it. Long live, uh, other operating systems!

That'd be kinda ridiculous, but if they forget about OpenGL then they can forget my support too.

Ya, for Vista they figured a way to hobble open GL so that thier DirectX finally works better (by comparison). Also they let the movie moguls dictate how movie files should run in the OS. Last I heard each frame needed to go through the bus in multiple passes to do it. Net result; even if you're allowed to have a movie on your computer, it will be choppy and use all resources.
Even now I have Linux on a second partition (dual boot), and whenever I need good performance I use it. For most things its just as easy as windows, and its secure enough not to need a virus scanner. Who needs Windoze anyhow

Currently, because game producers don't care about Linux gamers, these gamers need Windows. Most others can do without.

I have an all-Linux system with vmWare installed, so I can use Windows if I really really must.

Mildly deranged.
I also played around briefly with a beta copy of Vista. It's very...pretty(note disdainful tone).
However, I see very little improvement in functionality to justify my spending any money to upgrade.
I've been considering a switch to Linux for some time now, but as Phoenix mentioned, I'm afraid my games won't work.

I'm dual-boot, but I'd like to get something like VMware running too. Wouldn't know where to start though... I have an iso to install an OS to the virtual machine, I have VMware Player... What am I missing?

Yeah, so I'm stupid and all, but isn't Vista this new windows thingie, after XP?
Because I've heard it's waaaay too hard to get an illegal version (and who the hell really buys it for the ridiculous amount of money they want to sell it at?) There's loads of new protection shoot, including thins thing that gives you a number etc in a sort of database...If they find out you're 'illegal', your ass will be kicked big time. You can be prosecuted and all that shoot, and upgrading is impossible. Or am I just talking out of my ass right now?

You're a bit off. You won't be prosecuted because Microsoft can't legally get any information from you that you're not willing to give. However, they are tired of people using their programs for free, so, like you said, it would be hell getting it to work illegally.

And yeah, who wants to buy it for that ridiculous amount when there are free, decent alternatives around?

from what I have heard, in the current "Beta" release, (Or CPT or whatever they are calling it instead), it reveals one of the major types of backdoors that XP leaves open! If you use the Home version (or whatever), it sets the user by as Admin by default and defaults the password to blank!!

Oh yes, much simplier, but insanely insecure!! I hope they dont plan to leave that as is or they have learnt nothing from the similar problem in XP!
