Memory/graphics problem in HL2
I got HL2 and I can't get the dratted thing to run on my computer! It runs on my brother's computer, he has an ATI 300 graphics card and 512 MB of RAM, I have a NVIDIA GeForce 5200 graphics card and 1GB of RAM. When he runs it, it runs fine, when I run it, it says it has a problem reading memory.
EDIT: the whole message was: 'The instruction at "XXXXXXX" refrenced memory at "XXXXXXXX". The memory could not be "read".'. Where XXXXXXX was an address of memory.

Which D-mod is HL2? I don't recall any that would fit that acronym.
That's... weird. Couple ideas:
1) Have you experienced this in any other games or programs? It could be some sort of memory corruption that only occurs on memory-intensive applications.
2) Are you running a legit copy? HL2 has that copyright protection stuff through Steam, you know, so you can't just 'borrow' it. And if you're running a crack, it could be for a different version than what you have installed or something.

Oh. That was stupid. I realize it's a game now, but is it Halo 2 or Half Life 2? I haven't been able to buy games for about 5 years now, so I don't really know what's out and all that.
And if it's a memory problem, try the old standbys: kill every other task, and free up some hard disk space. You *might* not have enough room for the swap file.

@ redink1:
Nope, only HL2 and I did buy the game.
@ Chrispy:
Its Half-Life 2, and no processes were running at the time.
@ merlin:
Yeah.

Well, that's what you get for playing a game that uses code forged in hell, such as the unspeakable foulness that is STEAM.
Well, no graphics card problem as I use the same card and is more than sufficient for the game, try installing it again.
By the way, whats your processor speed.
It follows the laws of physics etc so it needs a processor on the higher side.
It happens the same with me when I play my DMod through windinkedit and I have to close the game using Alt+F4 because Dink is frozen.
WinXp creates an error report and the same message comes as Chaotic has.
But never experienced it with Half Life 2
