midis question
what happens if i play a song instead of a midi does it have to be a midi if its mainly cause of a larger file what if we only make one music scene a real song?
There are three things to consider when looking at the posibility of supporting MP3s.
First, the blatantly-obvious licensing issues. In order to legally be able to play an MP3, a fee of $10,000, I believe, must be paid to Thomson Multimedia for their Fraunhoffer (IIS) codec. Granted, there are open source codecs available, but that is a sketcky area.
Second, they would increase the size of a DMod by many megabytes, a possibility of 150 Mb in MP3s alone. Honestly, I could care less how long it takes to transfer on dialup, but I think 150 Mb in MP3s is ridiculous for a POS 5-hour game.
Third, where would you get these MP3s from? You would not be able to include copyrighted material unless you want the RIAA coming after your ass (Note to Europeans: Yes, the RIAA still applies, unfortunately, as this site is hosted in the US). You would have to make all new samples for your DMod, which could possibly take longer than coding the Mod itself.
The best solution for number one and two, after a few minutes worth of thinking on my part, is to use Ogg Vorbis with VBR (its specialty) at either 64 kbps or 96 kbps. But that still doesn't solve the third problem; MIDIs are so much more accessible.

i have 1700 mp3s and does the riaa care? no. why? i dont download metallica, they are fudgeing fabulous.
Actually there is only reason: it's not possible in Dink. There are no license problems whatsoever, the RIAA doesn't do a fudgeing thing about breaking licensing laws in a fudgeING DINK SMALLWOOD MOD. come on.
Only midi's and wave files can be played in dink.
You can convert a mp3 into a wave. Then make it the a type of wave file that hasn't to muck kb's.
I sounds difficult but it is really easy.
To convert a mp3 into a wave: Install kazaa lite ++ on you're computer and seach for software mp3 converter install it and convert the mp3's. Now you see the mp3's are are waves but they have a huge filesize. You must make the less big.
Open you're windows sound recorder and open one of you're mp3's and save them as a 8 bit sound or 16 bit sound and choose the mono's ones and you will see they will be less big.
And put them in you're sound folder of you're dmod and notify them in the start.c file.
Now you can play them as playsound( etc.)

Or maybe when you're lucky I have a mp3converter.exe install file for you. i can check if you want? I have it somewhere at home.
riaa cant do anything cause they are too busy sueing like old ladies and dead people or whatever. just dont pirate unreleased movies or listen to music from major recording companies, not because you will get sued but because that music blows anyway.
no not a bunch of mp3s just like one so the size isnt as large for those dialup people out there and also you can buy mp3s for a dollar each at many places
Dink doesn't support mp3's. 'Nuff said. MAybe when Windemere is out, you'll be able to, but for now, you'll just have to stick with MIDI's.
I don't know what you all are talking about but there are indeed licensing and legal issues to be dealt with when using MP3.
And sirakn, you crack me up. That $1 does not buy you rights to the song. It buys you the privilege to listen to it. For one person. Not everybody on the DN.
And dinkholland, Kazaa Lite ++ Sucks. Kazaa sucks in general. Use lame and run 'lame --decode input.mp3 output.wav'. Works like a charm.

How much would you like to bet? Why would Fedora omit MP3 support in their distro if there was no problem with it? And even Debian...
Thomson and Fraunhofer Gesellschaft have a licensing fee of between $50,000 and $60,000 for decoder applications and $2,500 for games. Also requiring a license is AAC, Atrac 3, and (E)PAC

what does all that german nonsense amount to me? no one cares.
I know kazaa lite sucks. I don't have it on my computer and I never will. BUt it is the easiest way to get software for free.
THe only time when I need kazaa is when I need software. ANd Then I immediatly uninstall kazaa.

Good argument, josh. You've really stumped Merlin now...
Hm? I ignored Josh because he was making no valid arguments. He stopped making sense when he said there was German in my post (the only I can locate is the name 'Fraunhofer Gesellschaft', which is just that, a name).
I really don't see why this thread is continuing to be posted in when obviously there is no more of the topic to discuss
Sometimes things are going on and on. THis is a forum so anything can be discussed or said when ever you want and whenever you like.
SOmetimes a topic can be changing of subject and continueing on and on.
I happens all the time. Don't be so mad about it.

I'm just waiting for josh to make even more of a fool of himself.
Yes, every topic at the DN changes, it happens when someone posts and someone else replys to one part of his post, or it can also change if an argument starts. Flame wars, Topic bouncing, Questions related to the topic are asked, etc.
Nah,why don't we all just kiss and make up.
I'll go first. *smooch*

merlin your being a bit rude why cant you just be nice and talk instead of making arguments?
<bad grammar>
sirakn your being a bit blind why cant you try to understand why im debating im not arguing
</bad grammar>
I'm *debating* on this issue, not arguing. And I am talking in a perfectly calm manner. I'm waiting for josh to signal defeat in a matter that he clearly already lost. And his silence on this issue has pretty much already done it. Not quite sure why you brought it up again.

Why the hell do you tolerate Josh then, Merlin?

I gave up because he wasn't capable of arguing above a 5th grade level.
And so do I. Every time I brought it up he'd say something like, "Well...your mom!"

A lot of moderators would have closed this by now... Tal is enlightened enough to let it die on its own.
Don't look Merlin or Josh in the eyes. I hear Merlin can suck out your soul, wheras Josh will just spit in your mouth. Ugh.
