I have restarted the game several times trying to follow the steps, hints, discussion, etc. to get the witch to make the poison, but NEVER get the job done. After talking to the chef, then talking to others in the town, including the scroll down with the arms dealer, but when confronting the witch, all I get is the "eat the children" line. Where am I going wrong? If I give up the light sword to the arms guy, then how can I free the children. Frustration overcomes me.

The arms dealer next to the chef will give you the option (scroll down) to ask him about poisoning after you agree to get spices for the chef. He will tell you to visit Dr.Stein. Dr |Stein will tell you to visit witch. Then you can talk to her.

1) no reason to give light sword to arm dealer, you need it.
2) in order to get the poison from the witch, you have to have 8 items that you have to collect on your way (she will tell you what components you need). Pay attention that you have to buy from dr. stein another magic man, you have to have 2 magic men. She will give you the poison, go back to the chef tell her you have the spices. with this you finish the spice quest. Then you can go back to weitch kill her, open the gate with the light sword and the children will give you a piece of raven staff.
Enjoy, it's a great game.

Wrong. Yes, give the light sword to the weapon seller but after you have freed the children.

Look at Trebor's answer.(good Job) He's telling you right. At first the weapon seller does not give you an option to talk to him about poisoning. You must complete certain actions first, Then you can go back to him and the option will be there when you keep scrolling. As far as what actions need to be done first, that's for you to figure out. Don't want to spoil the game for you.

Well, I finally got the poison, but killed the witch and freed the children right then. Then off to town and gave poison to the chef who gave Flux the stuff and I went back to the first town. Talked to the Major, then the daughter who told me to go to the ring and prepare for the match. Went to the ring and....died. Tried it two or three more times with the same result. Now, I wonder if I killed the witch too soon (maybe should be after the poison routine?), and never sold the lilght sword to the arms guy. I guess I did something out of order. Well, back to a save and try some more unless someone can tell me where I went wrong. Thanks for the help. It is a fun game.

Flux destroyes Dink, because you don't have found enough parts of the Raven Staff yet (which will break down the wizard's power), so look around in Niv and Old Armend for more pieces.

Dying in the ring has nothing to do with the order of actions or killing too soon.
Finding the staff pieces does.

Follow Raven's advice: you don't have .... enough parts of the Raven Staff yet (which will break down the wizard's power)

hee hee I luv this game.

Did you arm special boots (hyper/speed/grass - don't remember) before going to the ring?

What's this about "arming" the fruit boots? Never did that, but did finally get enough staff pieces (12) by selling light sword to arms guy after getting poison etc. On to the ring, Dink finally won over Flux and ended the game, leaving me (and all likely) panting for the next installment of this excellent dmod. In my mind, the best since the original Dink. Now, though, I wonder what arming the boots would have done. Maybe I'll play through it again just to find out. Thanks to all for the help in getting through this one finally. Much difficulty in getting every step down, and in the correct order so that the end and win can be reached. Let's go with part II...

They are speed boots which make dink move faster. You can arm (wear) the boots or you can arm the bladed weapon but not both at same time. However you can wear the boots and still use magic against Flux. Or arm the sword and kill flux faster but don't let him touch you. Your choice. Doesn't matter which.

Btw, are you sure you had 12 pieces of the raven staff?

Due to a bug in the junk collector's script you can buy 5 staff pieces more than once, and get a lot of pieces, but in the first part you should only get 10 parts in total.
The herb boots makes Dink moves and hit faster, most useful when travelling over vast areas.
