I was told you had to remove a silver chip inside the game cart in order to get Pikablu. I had a friend who found a Pokemon Blue cartridge on the ground and decided to give it a go. He came round to my place one day and we opened it up and took it out.
Unsurprisingly the game wouldn't save after that because the "silver chip" was of course the 3v battery. Incidentally this was the same friend who introduced me to Dink and installed it on my PC for me. Before this he also got me to surf around the SS Anne for at least an hour and tried to get me to somehow get on the roof of the Cinnabar Island Gym.
Finally after a while someone traded me a Mew they got using the Gold/Silver cloning glitch and that was that. It's incredible what people believed though.
