The Dark Ages
Punisher's rant got me going on a topic I'm very interested in. Being an ol' fantasy lover, I have a vested interested in all things pre-1800s.
Have at you:
What did the dark ages ever do to you, I ask?
All I hear these days is "dark ages this" and "dark ages that" - no one seems to have anything positive to say about the dark ages. Your' ancestors came from the "dark ages", you know.
Then again, who says they were any darker then the modern age? Can we prove that there wasn't as much light during this time?
The reality of it is that the "dark ages" were considered "dark" because civilisation was under severe strain from the hundreds of wars raging across Eurasia all of which stemmed from political and selfish motivations, bar none. The overwhelming threat of Islam and the Mongols in the East and the Vikings from the North-West inspired some aggressive characters and strong leaders in the people of central Europe, and Christianity was the one banner which united them against these enemies.

Dark ages. Where the night was filled with Dragons, and memory hath forgotten.
Much Progress, art, and knowledge stemmed from the end of the Dark Age, but even before then, there was progress, art, and knowledge.
Christianity is at the heart of why there was severe strain in the middle ages, including things such as the crusades, the inquisition, and general close-minded douchebaggery. Why try to glorify it?
Anyway, I don't think "dark ages" is really used as a term by modern historians, just because of the negative/misleading bias associated with that term I suppose. Wartime can be dark, the black death was certainly dark, (ugh) but labelling any period of several hundred years as a "dark age" does sound like a pretty gross generalization.

Nah... Micheal angelo and leoardo davinci lived during the Ressnasaince.
Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci on the other hand where from the Renaissance, a different period altogether.
And of course time never stood still during the Middle Ages, much of what we believe about the Middle Ages actually comes from Victorian times. Fact of the matter is that in many ways the 13th century was more advanced than the 14th century because of the black death pretty killing half of Europe's population. Blaming people for a lack of progress when half their population was killed because of some illness hardly seems fair.
To me the Middle Ages are a very interesting part of history as they shaped the way Europe looks today. Perhaps if you live outside of Europe where later colonization determined much of the way your country looks you might feel differently about this...
