Christianity is at the heart of why there was severe strain in the middle ages, including things such as the crusades, the inquisition, and general close-minded douchebaggery. Why try to glorify it?
Anyway, I don't think "dark ages" is really used as a term by modern historians, just because of the negative/misleading bias associated with that term I suppose. Wartime can be dark, the black death was certainly dark, (ugh) but labelling any period of several hundred years as a "dark age" does sound like a pretty gross generalization.
