It is different now, it actually makes much more sense now. This is how I'd translate it:

"To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die"

Though in all probability it would have to be like this: "Om te leven in harten die we hebben achtergelaten. Het is niet om voor te sterven." Which would translate as: "To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die for."

The second sentence makes a bit more sense in Dutch than it does in English, but its still a little bit tricky. The meaning that is implied is "It is not something to die for." I think.

In English, "To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die for." means that even if those you love remember you, it's not worth dying.
"To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die" is the nice saying, meaning that if you live on in the hearts of loved ones, you are immortal/ have not really died.

If I was getting it tattooed on, I'd go English: "To live in the hearts we leave behind is to never die" which according to Google is Dutch: "Om te leven in de harten laten we achter is om te sterven nooit"

Is this Google translate? That's Dutch, but it is pretty garbled.

Schnapper:

"To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die for." That might sound poetic in English, but in Dutch it's just dead wrong.

The sentence "To live in the hearts we leave behind is to never die" is really hard to translate in a poetic way, for example the word English word 'To' in this sentence makes sense in English but not really in Dutch. In fact it distorts the meaning of the sentence, the Dutch sentence is much better if the word 'Om' is removed. Poetry is just soo hard to translate...

Meta:

"To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die for."
Actually, that would be considered cynical and a little distasteful in English.

Here are some alternatives that should work in English (not sure how translating them into Dutch will be though ):
1.) "To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die."
2.) "To live in hearts we left behind is not dying."
3.) "To live in hearts we left behind is not to die"

I'm sure there are other ways to say it. It is only the word "for" that causes this sentence "To live in hearts we left behind. It is not to die for." to mean something cynical rather then inspiring.

Hey i need a nice dutch quote for my tattoo but maybe translating English isnt the best idea.

I tyed to translate "to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die" but obviously it wasnt spot on, and for a tattoo you def want it to be right.

Has anyone got any ideas for a nice dutch quote involving death ect (something like the quite above) that i can use??? PLEASE

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Thomas Campbell translated in Dutch, not by Google but by a Fleming is: "Verder leven in harten die we achterlaten is niet sterven"
