Hmmm. When I read Kyle's OP, I felt a little depressed because I'm weird and expect the fun things people come up with to not be fun for me. Then when I read MsDink's posts I felt depressed because if people don't do something to manage the people who are messing with the community, then it's possible the site could get overrun with spamming, flaming, trolling, and whatever else, and all I'd want to do is leave. I'm not saying we're anywhere near that point, but just thinking in principle, I'm guessing you have some other idea for keeping the DN a fun and worthwhile place, MsDink? In other words, please do go on and on. I want to hear what's in your mind.

I'm not looking to be a dictator, but I hope you realise that IF this forum had proper ban controls, some people would no longer be here right? And that wouldn't be ME making the decision, but the staff. That's how the internet is run in most communities, there's no free "I'll be an ass and get away with it" pass. You're still free to do and post whatever you like. But MsDink, if you're so in love with the way the flaming and trolling is going these days, I suggest you move to 4chan. It'll suit your needs. I don't understand how you like it this way when it never was this out of control before (that I know of). Surely too much is too much?

There are some on this network who already know the true nature of my project and they're excited about it. It's up to you to believe me or not. And interpreting my post as "Worship Kyle" is just trying to fan the flames. If you act like a brat at a concert, you're also thrown out. I don't see why the same rules can't apply here, because what I'm building is a community project and it can't use rotten tomatoes.

If you want to end trolling/flaming, this is not the way. Ignoring trolls IS a way and if that way fails, there SHOULD be a proper banmethod to ban ip-addresses. This can either be achieved by some arbitrary system in the forum itself or a plain serverban.

Things like "if you post something I think you shouldn't have posted I will not give you access to some arbitrary program/project" often result in
1) a group of users that don't want to post anymore, afraid that they will break the 'law' you just made
2) a group of users that will provoke and will look what is the edge you are defining, resulting in even more spamming and flaming and discussions if something was spamming...
3) a group of users that doesnt care wether or not you are giving them access to your undefined program/project and will continue the way they always did
4) a group of users that will do anything to make Kyle like them, so they might get more rights then others (hunger for power-users) -> the "worship Kyle"-community

You tell me how to end it then? I don't really like it when people shoot down initiatives but don't provide clear, well thought out alternatives. All I can say is that what I have planned requires community input and relations. There's no way the project will function with bad behaviour being at the core. So I'm not doing this to split the community, I'm doing this to make sure the project has a chance to work.

I am just saying that 1 user playing for god (if I don't like you, you will loose access to some project) is always a bad idea. It grants someone a 'power' that will always be abused, one way or another. If it isn't abused, people will starts discussions that that particular user abused his/her power, because "that particular post wasn't that bad and he/she shouldn't be banned for that post". Leave it to the staff... seriously. If this forum will never have a proper method for banning, then the staff (or redink1) should consider moving the forum to phpbb3, which has the possibility to ban IP's.

You're right Sumurai, I don't really want people to start judging other people's posts saying they should be on my banlist for what they said. And it's not like I have a clear set of rules that people need to abide by. I just want the needless flaming to come to an end. I don't have a clear solution for this either. Look, I'm not here to change the community, because I love this community, else I wouldn't have come back and I wouldn't camp this place 24/7.

I'm here to make my project work. I just made this thread because when the project is ready there won't be room for people with disruptive behaviour. But if I deny them at that point from being included, they'll say it's coming out of nowhere. That's why, together with the recent upheavals and much flaming, I decided to post this up front so people will know ahead of time which kind of people will and will not be accepted to participate.

Trust me that when the time comes the decent people here will be the ones crying for justice and the removal of the disruptive sources.

I should also note that I don't consider posts like: "What shoes should I wear today?" or "Agassi couldn't hit a ball in with superlenses in!" troll posts. I consider posts that are inviting people to have a violent discussion troll posts. Maybe on other forums the previous two examples would be troll posts too, but for this community I just don't want to see posts like: "Religion is retarted". I think that makes sense?

Kyle is not trying to become a forum god, a centre of worship, or even to to get people to like him... I can see why this project won't work with disruptive people, so as said - they need to be warned that they won't be a part of it, so it is not put down to rejecting them out of nowhere.
To further expand his intentions, even if someone blatantly stated they disliked Kyle, I'm sure they would still be included, as long as they are not a disruptive, flame-provoking, anger-raged troll. This project isn't about having power, it's about making it successful, with people who aren't going to destroy it.

I'm not trying to make anyone change their mind, I'm just helping fill a few 'gaps', as I just think a lot of people have misinterpreted Kyles intentions, and jumped straight to a conclusion that isn't true, by filling in gaps in information that hasn't been given yet. Also, I am not backing up Kyle because I have any power in this project (I only know of it, and have offered my help), so don't jump to that conclusion either... cause I know that would be coming next from people. This is merely my opinion, and my piece of mind.

What RobJ said hit the mark on all fronts. I think I made a mistake by not revealing more about the nature of the project because I wanted to keep it a surprise. But the harm is done now, no going back. I'm still sticking by what I said though, there's no room for disruptive behaviour. I've said more than enough about how I feel about this and I will do everything to make sure that kind of behaviour will not compromise the functioning and success of what I have planned.

And as RobJ said, I'm not interested in power at all. And even if you can't stand me MsDink, I wouldn't even consider that a reason to not let you participate if you'd like to when it's done It's a project that will start of being my baby, but soon it will be everyone's. That's why it's too important to safeguard its inception and growth.

Well I can see how you'd be against that, but really, isn't it that way in all aspects of life? There has to be someone keeping things from going out of control. That person is not me, I'm not a moderator or staff. And I can't ban anyone from the forum, I won't expel anyone from the community, ...

But I will assure you that there a lot of people not posting here or in other threads that are actually tired of reading through 30 subsequent posts where people attack each other or intentionally insult people or their beliefs. They'd rather read all the other silly posts that were filled with humour, a bit of sarcasm (hell, remember the picture post I made with the suicide things?), ... And it will be threads with the same topics as the ones that were turned into flame wars now, only they would have a positive vibe. I think it's actually the negativism that's so pervasive at the moment.

I think pretty much everyone agrees we don't need another thread topic category: "Flame War" next to general, off topic, development, ...

But what I will do is prevent the same behaviour from disrupting the flow of this project because if I don't, it will fall apart within a week and nobody will want that. And none of that will actually have an impact on what you can or can't post here. But the project has an external site I'm building, one that I'm managing seperate from TDN. On there you will make profiles that can be connected to your name here on TDN. So on that site, I'll take the necessary actions to make it a fun place to hang out

You do know Kyle used to be staff, and he's one of those people who you should respect on this site, for sticking with Dink, and people such as yourself, for over ten years. He is trying to stop the flaming, you go and get pissed off because you apparently so much love flaming. Hmmm... I don't think it would fit under a MODN category. Well, in a way yes, in a way no. In any case, I'm not a programming wizard who can create a new engine to run online, so temper those expectations

Skull, MsDink and I have gotten involved... a little more then others, but I'll take the liberty of surmising we all really love TDN and (most of) its' folk.

I'll sound sycophantic, but that makes sense, Kyle. I've seen several projects sink into oblivion because people get too excited at the start and bombard the leaders with ideas or feedback which seems to make the thing top-heavy before it's developed enough to stand on it's own two legs.

Instead of complaining all the time and saying someone sucks in private PMs and that kinda stuff, people should take action and actually do something about it. Not just try to be quiet or avoid telling the truth, but tell things as they are. Finally people seem to at least admit that TDN is at the top of suckage atm.

I, for one, am officially hyped. Have you, by any chance, found a way to suck users into the Dink Network via some sort of Interwebz Vacuum? That would be in tents. Because we would go camping in the files section.

EDIT: Also, I don't it would be "extremely foolish" to stop spamming because you're offered a reward. I think it would be extremely foolish to keep spamming, regardless of whether you will be rewarded or not. You just get more than the community not hating you.

I'm working on the quantum technology right now for an Interwebz Vacuum, but there are some kinks I need to resolve, such as the moon not being pulled closer to earth. I'm getting there though!

ETA is unknown, because I have non D-mod related technology to research and implement. It's progressing on a daily basis however, not just something I work on now and then.

I'll be honest, I'm currently in the middle of a hardcore teacher class/internship that's pretty much taking up all my time. EVEN SKYRIM PLAYTIME IS LOW!

So, I won't say this is still something on the immediate horizon and I won't lie about that. But it's still something I'd like to do at one point in the future, probably around March-April when I'll have a little more time.
