Hmm.. 
Ye, I'm not going to submit any more files for the dink network, at least not for some time.
I finding dink too limiting graphically, too low resolution and lack of transparency makes it impossible to make any interesting graphics. I also think the scripting language is holding me back, I can't make everything that I want to.

I feel that the time have come for me to move on and start making my own games, so one week ago I bought myself an apple development account, which will allow me to sell games on the iphone app-store, so programming and making graphics for my games for iphone and Mac will take up my time from now on.

I might however fail to learn or grow tired of it and come back to good old dink, but for now all my dink-related projects are put on hold.

Anyway this doesn't mean that I'm leaving the dink network, I'll still be here, maybe reviewing new files and posting, and if someone needs a specific graphic for their D-Mod it's just to PM and ask me.

Oh and when I succeed to make an iPhone game I expect you all to rate it 5 stars and tell you friends that it's awesome no matter how hard it sucks! xD

I am disappointed in you, IPD. I knew the fame you received here would rise into your head. I also hate to hear those words "DinkC is too limited". It's like you have created a D-Mod of the decade. DinkC is not limited at all. When I was a nub, I almost managed to create a First Person Shooter with DinkC, but I grew tired of creating graphics. This thread is basically saying "I'm better in creating stuff than any of you, so I'll move on into better stuff". So for crying out loud, don't post these kinda threads even if they're true, just go create games for Crapple.

Skull that's a little harsh... DinkC is limited compared to a "real" programming language, and if you do know something else it's only normal to want to do the best you can, regardless of how good it is in relation to other's work.

Skull I'm not saying I'm better than anyone else just that I've made a couple of dmods and want to do something else, and how can you say this thread is pointless when you, more then once have created "I'm leaving"-threads just to see if people like you, without actually leaving? (like this one http://www.dinknetwork.com/forum.cgi?MID=125863 or the one Ilinked to in that thread)

Anyway thanks for wishing me good luck, everyone else.

So Dink's revenge won't get released then? It's not a rare thing to leave a DMOD trilogy unfinished, there are many examples of this. I think Arinthia + Friends Beyond might be the only trilogies that DID get finished...

But good to hear that you're moving on to bigger things, and above all, that you've found yourself a hobby/future profession that you're interested in.

It's better to release an unfinished DMOD than nothing at all, so if you like, think about letting us see what kind of work you did with Dink's Revenge before jumping out of the building.

Hey man, good luck with your new projects. I can fully understand why you move on to a new platform, Dink is indeed pretty limited (though that also makes it easier to master!). I really liked to see you develop from someone who knew little about making DMODs to developing your own games in just over a year.

Good luck, and I hope you'll find some time to do some reviews/board posts.

I hope you understand it's a long and tiresome road to mobile development. It will be nothing like the friendly DinkC language you've come to learn. Object orientated programming in Cocoa is a beast even some of the best programmers would love to avoid, best of luck though.

I know it'll not be that easy but I've gotten myself a lot of ducumentations and I'm in no hurry; I still live at home and study wich I get all nessecary money from so my life isn't depending on me getting a best-selling app in a month. I'm patiant and like this so eventually I'll learn..

And synbi, we'll see if I get around wraping DR into an demo, otherwise it would be a shame... Both in DR and Agatha I've made some things I'd like to show you guys...

I consider the limitations more of a challenge, then something to hold you back. Consider .kkrieger, a 3D FPS which takes up 97kb, including all textures!

It IS limited. Bye IPD. And DinkC is! You can make it do only stuff in the grahics. In 3d games animations can be done without making new graphics, only scripting!

We have Dink's source though, which makes it have far less limits than in regular DinkC (if you can get the Dink source to compile).

Can't blame ya, this community wants to cling to a decade-old game engine that needs some major improvements to keep it good.

I'm not hanging around much any more because not only are we stuck cracking the same jokes about people who have moved on from this, but the outlook for improvement is poor at best.

No active person with site admin permissions, random quotes still going back to somewhere around '03 at the latest and a dwindling community are resulting in a game that may go to the grave within a few years.

My personal advice for trying to save yourselves is:
1. Get whoever is active and has the highest permissions admin powers somehow so stuff can actually happen.
2. Update stuff, this place is becoming more and more of a museum.
3. Try to attract some more attention to the community. Not everyone is gonna see Dink in the games list for Linux.
4. Make some changes to the actual game, think outside of the box. I felt my creativity would have been limited by our current screen-by-screen setup. Try something like something that scrolls to the movement of Dink. Also try things like extra inventory slots. Why shouldn't you be able to sword ducks while wearing herb boots?
5. Stop looking like a dying community.

This is just how I see it. I'll still hang around to try to dominate pollocracy but other than that I'll be generally gone.

You can write DinkC scripts for using herb boots while weilding a sword, you just need code for testing when an item is added to your inventory (the boots) and then when it is removed from your inventory, so when you get it it is providing extra speed and when you loose it you become slow again. Also, I think I saw an example of scrolling backgrounds on here a while ago, I don't think it was anything too fancy but could be modified. And extra inventory slots? Isn't there a chest script out there somewhere? If you want carryable inventory then you could easily modify the scripts for that.

Also, I don't look like a dying community... *looks around*

Dink has been dieing for over 10 years now. I can distinctly remember an article from August 2000 stating that Dink might be dieing. I personally don't see it dieing in the very near future.

I thought Dink died the most in spring time?

Again, what stuff? Files are up to the authors. The site itself is fine IMO except for some little bits like the partners list.

Many of us prefer the screen-by-screen movement over side-scrolling. And the other stuff can be done as others have mentioned, even if it's not by default. Thinking outside the box is done in D-Mods quite often.

To be fair Dink's been dying since it's birth, since it wasn't particuarly revolutionary when it was released given the technology available at the time, we had engines like Half-Life released the following year. It's always been a small community though and never had particuarly mass appeal (doesn't mean it was a bad game, just never got the attention it deserved), I kind of hope it does stay up though as a monument to what was a very fun and close-knit community while growing up during my youngest teen years!
