I know sarcasm when I see it, and the smiley is the perfect indicator. Just imagine this face on someone's apologetic face and you'll see why this is clearly not serious.
I really AM sorry! Oh, I forgive IPD, but for what? And I just like the smiley. I had turned images off due to pictures of you-know-what popping everywhere, and I took a hazard guess at the blush smiley, but it was evil, so I said, why not?
Never underestimate the power of a smiley. Smileys are probably the strongest tools you can use for expressing emotions. If you have something serious to say you should be really careful about using smileys. Using the evil smiley after a sentence like 'please don't hold it against me in future.' suggests that if I do hold it against you this will mean that you will get back at me. That's not an apology, that's a threat.
