To append a bit, we actually had some word lists in our English classes - we were supposed to know whether it was the Brits who preferred "forgot" over "forgotten" or the other way around, or who spells "tires" and who "tyres". Or "centre" and "center", "theatre" and "theater".
For consistency, it might be an idea to only use British or U.S. words in a written piece, but I don't really see why 4th grade students (10-year-olds) would need to know
