I think the best 1 handed weapon is an ethereal Breath of the Dying (runeword) berserker axe. There are definitely better armors, but the boots are good. The only sucky thing about starting closed bnet would be having to start all over 
But you do have better chances of getting the items you need (especially high level runewords) by doing bnet. There are also bnet exclusive items (like the hellfire torch) that help to make you stronger. So you should definitely look into it.
