I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to.I guess. 
It actually does if you think about it. Nowadays, we have ways to treat those kinds of people. Back then, they didn't have anti-depressants, or counseling, or anything like that.

Well then, how would they handle someone who wants to kill themselves (back in that day)?
You can't know they won't start attacking other people, letting them get killed for killing other people. And if they wanted to kill themselves, there is obviously something wrong with them. What do you with things that are wrong? You get rid of them. (or did they really have a great track-record with dealing with the disabled and mentally handicapped?)

The person who attempts/commits suicide automatically brings question upon the rest of family, which could lead to other members of the family being scapegoated then worse. It's easier to vilify this person and save whatever honor/standing/respect that family still has and get rid of the black sheep.
