You need to sail to One Tree Island, and you need a boat to do so. You have to solve a couple riddles in order to go to Port Town (a few trees are blocking various bridges, and some bridges won't let you cross and such, try talking to them), where you can get a boat after a few little quests.
It sounds like you need to go south-east of where you currently are.
