Yeah, the way opens once you get the lightsword because by that point in the plot you can't get all the scroll pieces. To get in while there's still some game left, get all 3 scroll pieces and read them on the screen with the stone henges. You get one from the cannibal subquest, one from the missing daughter subquest and one from the bar wizard's subquest, although if you mess the latter up you can buy the scroll from the shady dealer downstairs.
In pre 0.98 versions there was a nasty bug in the scroll that could easily mess up variables when it got added to your inventory, so I wouldn't be surprised if no-one actually managed to get into the temple that way before. Or, if they did, it was with only one piece.
Edit - also note that the scroll only takes up one magic slot. Depending on how many pieces you have, Dink will either say "I'm still missing most of the scroll", "I'm still missing some of the scroll" or read the incantation.
