Traditional RPG? I'd wager that there are no traditional RPGs on a console... remember the whole RPG thing is a descendent of Paper Role Playing Games, where customization is key.

You aren't given a character, you have to create your own and develop the story from there.

In all console RPGs that I can think of, you can't create your own character, outside of class and name. And, from my outside perspective, RPGs like Final Fantasy are just glorified stories surrounded by some limited exploration, mini-games, and a battle-system. Not exactly playing a role.

Contrast that to something like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, or Neverwinter Nights where you actually create a character. You can be a ruthless fellow who kills everyone he can, or a kind soul who befriends even the mutants. In at least Fallout 2, you can disregard the main story almost entirely and do your own thing. That's role playing.

I think I could be wrong though.
