Hmm. I think Oblivion's the only one where it's not fully open world. In Morrowind, you can do whatever you want and complete the main quest in whatever way you want right from the start.

In Don't Buyrim, you have to at least get dragons to show up if you want to be harassed by them every 6 seconds but not have them land most of the time. Also, the bone armour that you won't make for several eras.

In Oblivion, you have to play through the horrendous main quest to get as many gates to spawn as you can. If you want to raid the Deadlands often for shit and sigil stones, you have to suffer some of the worst writing and voice acting in existence for more random ones to show up.

But after finishing them? They're all the same. Either mod it until it breaks or just close it for some period of time because the side quests are mostly worthless.
