If you don't have an account, just leave the password field blank.
As far as I know, Gog handles updates of some of the games like Ultima: Savage Empires and stuff like that so you can play them with little or no error (except that some DRM trivia was still in one of the games I tried), and on Steam, the updates are all up to the devs that sell their games on there.
