Byte is usually denoted with a capital B and bit with a lowercase b, so kB is kilobyte and kb is kilobit. Also, when you see things advertised you can safely assume that it's the lowest value you can imagine still having that abbreviation. 512 kbps sounds faster then 64 kBps after all.

Companies selling harddrives have found all kinds of strange abbreviations that are just a little bit lower in size than a byte. They're using decimal prefixes (multiples of 1000) rather than computer prefixes (multiples of 1024). That's why that 500 GB harddrive never actually gives 500 gigabytes.
