How do you pick stuff up?

I'm in Terris in v1.08 and I've been reading the walkthroughs and they say to pick up heart containers... are they the things monsters drop when they die? And how do I pick them up? I didn't know you could pick them up... please help!

Heart containers are the large orange hearts that add up to your maxixmum hitpoints.
They're not orange, are they? 
I always thought of them being gold...
