Actually, you're really better off working on a d-mod on your own, especially if you're new. It takes a lot of continuous work and communication to successfully complete a mod with other people over the Internet.
In my opinion it's probably best to do a short D-Mod first - one that has chance of being finished! I'm working on my first (proper) D-Mod at the moment which is about a Romp->Quest size. When working on various plots I discovered that I had a few epics on my hands, so I decided to do one where the end was actually in sight.
For me, learning DinkC doing a smaller D-Mod (rather than being completely in over my head in an epic!) seemed a much better way to go.
Depending on your experience in D-Modding (is that a word?), it might be best to work by yourself on a small sized D-Mod first. (Like me

I don't think many people will like it to just code a DMOD, having someone else making the storyline. Seeing your own idea come to life is quite important too. So be prepared to do some of the hard labor too. And even then, I doubt you'll find many people prepared to work together with you, unless you have made some good DMODs before.
Oh, and don't try to start on an epic, unless you're really really persistent. If you're new to DMODing you're going to find your earlier work really bad if you look back and you'll abandon the DMOD. Or you'll come up with an entirely different story halfway through, ending up with the same result.
I took 2 years of completely failed DMODs before I was able to release anything, primarily because I was aiming to high. After finishing two reasonable DMODs I was finally able to come up with something good. Examples of people who released a decent epic as their first DMOD are very rare.
Still, I hope you'll manage to pull through and release a good DMOD one day.

In all seriousness, I would highly reccomend starting out with either a romp or quest. Sounds like what you have in mind would be a best suited as a quest, in all honesty. An epic just needs a lot more than that simple of a plot, at least in my opinion. Hone your skills with that first, then start looking into more advanced scripting for future d-mods. Good luck.
