What does everyone think of the newest Modest Mouse album? I myself think their song 'Float On' is over-hyped and there are many much better songs of theirs before it.

I've never heard of this band...but I'm going to go google it now...

Okay I listened to samples of each of the
songs from their new album and the only one
I thought was alright was 'Float On'.
Although I was somewhat amused by 'Bukowski' which said 'who would want to be such a control freak?' and I laughed and said 'ME,ME!!'

What type of music is this?

It's alternative. Some of their good albums are Lonesome Crowded West and (IMHO) The Moon and Antarctica.

Personally, I think it's a very nice album, though I've admittedly heard very few of their songs prior to Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

"All Night Diner" is still my favorite.

If you're going for that indie rock stuff, you'd be better off picking up Explosions in the Sky. They're awesome.

I really don't care if I'd "be better off" listening to Explosions in the Sky, but I am willing to check out anything.

Hrmm, I don't think Float on is that great (it is a nice song, but it's WAY too mainstream). The song Tundra/Desert is truly Modest Mouse at their finest (although as Tal says, All Night Diner is a great song).

I don't know about better off, but they are indeed awesome. Also awesome is Godspeed You Black Emperor.

Though it does have that obvious mainstream appeal to it, compared to most stuff on radio it's pure gold. I can't think of very many examples at the moment, but the new Seether song is one worth picking on... horrible lyrics, cliched riffs, the usual suspects. I can't believe Amy Lee is dating (or dated?) the frontman from that band. I think she needs to pay me a visit
