the frustrating thing about idea's

I hate it when I get a new idea that seems so great. You can see it clearly, and you feel that it'll work. Then you actually get started, write scripts, etc. You run the game and what happens? It doesn't work. It just won't work! You look at the script again, and you find some mistakes. You correct them (at least you think you are) and when you run it again, you see it still won't work. And then you seem to be stuck in a vicious circle that goes on and on. There's a term for it: frustration...

Anyway, I got some new ideas, but they're not working out as nicely as they should. I'll get the code right though. Sooner or later.

If games and dmods were totaly easy to make there would bee too many to play. Its hard. Its frustrating. Once you see it through it gratifying! Just don't make your first dmod a big one like I did, or you may forget why you started before you finish.

hehe, this reminds me of the time I started making dmods. I really wanted someone to follow Dink, and so I worked on that for hours and hours and hours. By the time I got my follow- script to work, I found out about the sp_follow(); command that did almost exactly the same as my unbelievably long script. It's kinda sad that nowadays I could propably make a follow script that works well (sp_follow(); works, but not very well) in less than an hour.

Oh well, trying to do things yourself is the best way to learn them really well. Though that's the harder way.

It really is the most frustrating if scripts, don't work, indeed. I first had deleted the lines in main.c that maked the global vars save_x and save_y. I tried to find out why my creatures didn't loot. So I search trough the complete emake file. changing anything. Running debugmode. Checking it about hunderd times with c-edit. And than, completly frustrated to hell, I posted it here on the board, a day later the whole think was fixed and I really felt extremely stupid...

Heck, Cloud Castle has some of the worst scripting (that works) released. Having gone back through the scripts, I really knew bugger all about DinkC... but somehow got the effects I was after.

It just comes with practice, and studying other scripts I guess.

The best way to learn stuff is to make mistakes You probably never forget. And the better you know dinkc, the more efficient you work, I guess. Let's keep practicing

Good point Stef, but let me get a second opinion.
