Final Fantasy VII's "villain"
I'm sick of trying to figure out what is truly the villain of Final Fantasy VII; The core villain you fight at the end. Is it Jenova in Sephiroth's form? Is it a clone of Sephiroth? What!?
Seriously, I get it. The only real Sephiroth died at the Nibelheim Reactor and now exists without form in the Lifestream. Great, so it's all this easy to understand, right? No. Just simply not for me. I get that the "Sephiroth" the party chases around in Final Fantasy VII is actually Jenova in Sephiroth's form travelling to the Northern Crater...but wait. Who the hell is that guy in the crater? He looks so much like Sephiroth. Wait, is this a clone of Sephiroth at the Nortern Crater, or is it Jenova again? If it is a clone of Sephiroth, why does he only have pants on and then have his full costume on at the bottom of the crater where Holy is being kept? Did he randomly change clothes while sleeping, or did he wake and take Sephiroth's form by adding clothes to himself? How does it transform twice into beings that look like Sephiroth? Is it Jenova once again imitating his form, but gradually more monstrously?
After you defeat this "Safer Sephiroth" who might actually be Jenova again, who is this shirtless Sephiroth you fight in the lifestream with only your enormous sword and limit break to help defeat him? Is that the Sephiroth you saw in the Northern Crater that you gave the Black Materia to? What the hell is going on? You give "Shirtless Sephiroth" the Black Materia, chase "Sephiroth" down the crater, find Jenova's heart in the form of a giant boss, defeat that, fall into the area where Holy is being kept by what appears to be Sephiroth in clothing all of the sudden (we'll call him Maybe Sephiroth), and then "Maybe Sephiroth" transforms twice into a "Cocoon Form", then a "God form", then you beat those, and fight "Shirtless Sephiroth" in the lifestream which appears to be tainted by his presence.
Anyone have any less of a life than me that knows this story in and out? I've been trying to figure this out for years!

Haven't played through the game (It's a shame), but I've always thought that Sephiroth is the main villain in FFVII.
Alright, here's my theory:
The Sephiroth for most of the game is actually Jenova in the form of Sephiroth, but the one you find, "Shirtless Sephiroth" is the main clone of Sephiroth that is ultimately the one you find at the bottom of the crater and the one you fight as Bizarro and Safer.
Buuuuut...no. That doesn't explain the strange change of attire from no shirt, to cloak, to no shirt again. Someone help, this is a painful clusterduck of not-explainedness.

I really wish this was explained in the games...
So, the true Sephiroth, the one that died at the Nibelheim Incident is the same one in the cocoon at the Northern Crater?
How, what? He burned away, didn't he?
Duck this, this article at least clears it up a bit. Seems my very original theory was correct after all. How can a game like this be so bewilderingly confusing?!

Because not enough time was put into making sure it had as little plot holes as possible and good character development.
I disagree. I think there's a balanced amount of story and character development; It's just that one thing I ranted on at the start of this thread that gets me really confused.
...Well, that and the whole thing about Genesis Rhapsodos and the "Gift of the Goddess" and all that crap. But I will not go into that; I don't really care. LOVELESS has no impact on anything whatsoever anyways. <_<
...Annnnd the Projects. Ok, this compilation is definitely confusing.
When it came to the core game, however, there was enough dialogue to set up the characters, enough time with them, and pretty much no plot holes aside from ... well, probably the whole of the Sephiroth in the Northern Crater business.

Sephiroth is made using Mako infused with Jenova's cells, pretty simple.
The Sephiroth Cloud fights at the very end with Omnislash is a symbolic fight I believe. I've always seen it as two wills colliding in the lifestream or in Cloud's head. In a way I believe it's Cloud freeing himself from Sephiroth's influence that he's felt all game long. This is why Aerith is the one pulling him out. She resides in the lifestream and saves him.
FFVII was the first RPG I'd ever played, so I was completely blown away and confused myself. But even now, 15 years later, I still like the story, the characters and the resolution. Call it nostalgia if you wish

Wait, don't you read that site all the time? And you didn't look it up there?
I haven't gotten any farther in the game, btw.

Kyle, what you're telling me is Cloud pictures Sephiroth without a shirt on in his mind?
...
...
...why wouldn't he - I do *swoons*
Cloud is OBVIOUSLY a fabulous vampire.
Zack killed Sephiroth, not Cloud!
And Genesis was equally awesome
