Everybody knows LOL is not one of those "kid codes", but a Finnish showing of empathy, made up for elderly people. It's hard to explain in English, so I'll just use this conversation from a nursing home's TV-room as an example:
"Old person 1: My friend just died
Old person 2: LOL
Old person 3: lol, that's horrible
Old person 4: I'm sorry
Old person 5: LOL
Old person 6: lol, hopefully he didn't suffer."

Kid codes? I really hate when people automatically assume only kids use "codes" like that. I know for a fact that adults use them too; Not to be cool in front of the teenagers, but because they themselves are nerds or internet veterans that probably grew up when they started being used.
