Australia used to be covered by water and connected to NZ. Once Australia finished it's bath, it decided it didn't need NZ any more and kicked her a good 2000 km away. NZ is now Australians' equivalent to USA's Hawaii.
More like Canada is to the USA, not actually part of it, just technically.

Just one , (Aussyland) is just a little bigger than the other (Mothership NZ) I believe if you take a quick peek underwater, you'll see they're connected. And once the Great Old Ones awake and rise from the sea, the water level will drop, and you'll be a single island once again. Not that we'll be around long enough to enjoy it.

NZ is an unofficial proxy state for Aus. Essentially NZ is Aus, but in NZ, all the dangerous animals are replaced with sheep.
