The Simpsons

The Simpsons is a thread inspired by the latest poll, on which cartoon is our favorite. I voted The Simpsons, and my wandering walk of the mind(remember, not all who wander are lost) led me until I arrived at the big question, which, if you would all in unison say aloud with me, is:

Which state is the town of Springfield located in?

Tell me your theories. Tell me your reasons. Give me evidence. Anything. But discuss the location of Springfield, and convince me that your conclusion(s) are correct.

Well, its on one of the coasts (probably the east coast) because a few episodes had Homer and co. going into international waters from the Springfield docks. They've also made a few trips to New York City and Washington D.C and Florida and Virginia Beach. So my guess is Maryland because... um... its like in the middle of the east coast.

I don't know the exact location, but it would have to be somewhere with LOTS of pollution. Actually, there are more than one American citys called Springfield.

No, it couldn't be Illinois because they took a trip to "Capital City" and Springfield IS the capital of Illinois. I was thinking New York, but I can't remember why anymore. :T

Edison?

Anyways... I know Groening actually had his hometown in Oregon in mind when creating it, but that doesnt mean that's where it is... still, I think that it's probably on the west coast, probably in Oregon or Washington, but not California.
Reasons:
In the navy episode, Homer goes off in a submarine *I believe* from the Springfield docks. He then proceeds to Russia and everyone thinks he's a communist traitor.
In the episode where Lisa climbs into a tree to keep it from being cut down, the tree is quite massive. New York and the East coast tend to have smaller trees, whereas the West coast has redwood forests.
However, it's also possible that the town has actually been moved several times. If you'll recall the episode where Homer allows large cities to deposit their garbage under Springfield, in the end the town becomes a landfill and they simply move all the buildings. It's perfectly possible that this has happened several times.

Anyways. My B-S theories.

It's the Simpsons, so there really aren't any logical theories. The location of South Park is in Colorado and the weird things that happen to them don't really depend on their location.
