Happy Birthday WC
Posted by Tal on Thursday August 1st, at 02:56 AM
Since WC's staff, I figured I could post about this.

Today, August 1st, 2002, is WC's 18th birthday. He can now legally smoke (which he won't, I'm pretty sure) and legally look at "naughty images" (which he already does).

Happy birthday from everyone in the Dink community, Mike. Yeah, I know I don't quite represent everyone (we're all cynical flamers?), but I don't think anyone wants you to have a bad birthday....fogy.

It's Tarzan like you've never seen him before!
Posted by Dukie on Thursday August 1st, at 07:08 AM
"Have you ever dreamed of running through a forest naked in a lightning storm and saving the day?" Only RTSoft can come up with insane game plots like these. This is the mini-game that Seth mentioned he was working on a while ago. It's also (and mainly) an entry in gamedev.net's Four Elements Contest.

I played it and liked it. It's short, but filled with Seth's unconventional humor we've grown to love. You have to pee on trees to save them! In 3D!! Don't you wish you had Seth's brain? So download this at RTSoft's site and save those trees!!

New Dev File: Hard.dat Rewrite
Posted by redink1 on Thursday August 1st, at 09:12 AM
I have released a new Dev File, a Hard.dat Rewrite. Its basically improved in every way... if you're working on a D-Mod you'll probably want to include it. Also, unlike v0.1, the geometric tiles are included, and are in the same place they are in the original.

Monthly Update: July DOTM and August Story
Posted by redink1 on Thursday August 1st, at 09:35 AM
The July 2002 Download of the Month is ready to be voted for. In case you don't know how this works, all new files from the past month are entered in a contest of sorts, which everyone with an account can vote on. The file with the most votes wins. For more info, see the Awards page.

Also, the August 2002 story is ready for your thoughtful contributions. So submit a few chapters.

Updated D-Mod: Legend of the Pillbug v1.01 *UPDATE*
Posted by redink1 on Friday August 2nd, at 06:59 PM
Nam Hoang has released the full version of The Legend of the Pillbug. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I looked over the map and it looks like a lot has changed from the demo.

Updated on 8/3/02: It seems I royally screwed over v1.00 of LOTP... somehow I included it twice in the same zip file (it didn't arrive that way), and Dink gets stuck in the beginning. v1.01 only includes one copy of LOTP, and Dink no longer gets stuck at the beginning. Download it at the same place.

Recondite Fourteen: IITYWYGMAD
Posted by redink1 on Monday August 5th, at 09:52 AM
Unlike the dreadful article that was known as Recondite Thirteen, Fourteen is much more uplifting... I think. Anyway, within this Recondite are poll comments, a poll for Recondite Thirteen that never made it up due to technical problems, what happened to last Saturday's Ask Tal, and some Community stories about Dinkanoid and such.

Recondite is my weekly article, where I type all sorts of weird things, usually with a Dink Smallwood tie. View the comments to read it.

New Dev File: Dink's Trunk
Posted by WC on Monday August 5th, at 04:21 PM
Let's talk about Dink's Trunk (no pun intended), this is a new Development Source that allows Dink to hold more items than allowed by the inventory screen. Here is Tyrsis's discription, "This system lets Dink have a lot more items using an auxiliary inventory in the form of "treasury chest" that Dink can visit from time to time or a mobile trunk that he carries around.". Isn't she a genius? Anyways, all you d-mod authors that are interested, Dink's Trunk looks to be a very good feature for your d-mods (Hint Simon, SOB).

Banner Ad Contest has Ended

To view (and comment on) all of the entries, view the comments. The Dink Network staff will decide which banner ad wins sometime in the near-future, after reading everyone's comments.

New 'Frontend': Dmodrun
Posted by redink1 on Saturday August 10th, at 08:59 PM
cyanblade has released Dmodrun a new 'frontend'. It allows you to run D-Mods without using a frontend, so while it isn't technically a frontend, I stuck it in the frontend category anyway.

Posted by WC on Sunday August 11th, at 06:37 PM
Ehasl requested ABCD to be deleted from our database, and after a staff vote we decided to follow through with his wishes. Everyone take a minuet shed a tear, and remember this great* d-mod. (Now lets hope I didn't fry the database!)

*This may be highly exaggerated

New Contest: Alternative Hero D-Mod Romp (*Updated Rules*)
Posted by redink1 on Tuesday August 13th, at 07:17 PM
Are you interested in making D-Mods, but simply can't find the motivation to do it? Or are you quite good at making them, and want to find a new challenge? Tada, this Contest might help.

Basically, the goal of the contest is to make an Alternative Hero D-Mod. It also allows D-Mods to compete against D-Mods in a Contest, instead of battling everything in DOTM contests.

Vacation Time
Posted by redink1 on Wednesday August 14th, at 08:14 PM
Bleh, I must leave for a tortu... er, Family Vacation for about a week starting next Friday (the 16th). So don't send me any files, or any e-mail at all, actually.

I will give Kyle the ability to delete message board posts and comments, so if somebody starts posting about the wonders of buying watches made out of bananas, or some other get-rich-quick scheme, he'll probably take care of it.

The Dink Network: Changing User Names
Posted by WC on Saturday August 17th, at 09:25 PM
I have had several people e-mail me about changing their DN name. Sorry to tell everyone that isn't happening any time soon. You also can't have more than one account registered, if you do and we catch you, there will possibly be trouble. Why do we do this? Simple, voting in DOTM you could vote multible times, and reviewing your own files and such. After a talk with a fellow staff member about a user with multiple accounts (even though they meant no harm with it) we decided to deactivate the second account (even though they wanted that one and the first one deleted) because as redink once said "Once you choose a user name on the Dink Network, you are stuck with it" (he's the boss ). If you really want your account name changed, e-mail me and I will see what I can do, but possibly not much and you will likely be stuck with it.

Happy Birthday Allison
Posted by WC on Sunday August 18th, at 12:35 PM
Since Tal kicked me in the balls and told everyone when it was my Birthday, I decided to do it to Alli (we love picking on her anyway). Everyone send Alli lots of presents!

Deleted D-mod: Baywatch
Posted by WC on Sunday August 18th, at 02:17 PM
Vilius has requested that his poor D-mod Bay Watch to be deleted. After talking with the rest of the staff (except Dukie, he was smoking pot), we went with his wishes.

Reviews Invalidated
Posted by Kyle on Tuesday August 20th, at 06:51 PM
You're going to hate me for this, but it had to be done. Don't worry, I discussed it with Redink, it's not just something I decided to do without permission.

I've gone through ALL reviews and invalidated those that couldn't really be called review. I've deleted about 30-35 mini-reviews and 5 or 6 full reviews became mini-reviews.

When Redink's back, I'll ask him to change the reviewing rules and point to the fact that there were many reviews that weren't by the rules. For some, this may seem ridiculous, but I'm sure that those who take the time and effort of writing thorough reviews will regain some of the respect they deserve by doing it. Unfortunately, some people will suffer greatly because they were used to writing two-liners. I can only ask them to accept it or rewrite their review, sorry. I'm sure it's due to the lack of proper examples that we've seen so many two-liners and such, so I'll look up which reviews were only barely accepted and which weren't.

Already looking at your account for missing reviews? Think you've kept all of them? Don't feel at ease just yet. I still have to check a few mini-reviews again, because I've only looked at size so far. Only a few invalidated ones were invalidated because of its content. So, if you think you've got a review that lacks content I advice you to add a few more details to it or you may end up without.

I've included a couple examples that didn't make it through and which I remembered in the comments.

Recondite Fifteen: Chaos *Update
Posted by redink1 on Thursday August 29th, at 06:56 PM
Recondite is my article, and is supposed to be weekly (though it is never released on a schedule) and is usually a whole lot of crazy rants, stories, poll comments, and links.

Updated 8/30: with some clarifications/additions I forgot about.

Read the comments for more.
