The Dink Network

The Lost One: Mythago Wood

And so, the gods of words decreed that there shall be a new article to grace the land of The Dink Network, and all were repulsed in its horror. Instead of focusing on random things, funny questions, abandoned discussions, it would instead focus on the utter horror gnawing at the underbelly of The Dink Network: D-Mods that were started, but never saw the light of day.

For The Lost Part One, I've decided to focus on Mythago Wood. It was started by SabreTrout, and he recruited the aid of Simeon, Binirit and myself. The project promptly went no-where, but we did get some kinda cool test screenshots made out of it.

For more information, including what the original thoughts were, read the comments.

The Foundation

Perhaps I should have talked to SabreTrout before posting this article, as I'm not sure exactly what inspired Mythago Wood. Back in July of 2003, SabreTrout posted a blog (that he has since deleted) about a partnership that he had formed with Jamie to produce two group D-Mods.

SabreTrout would head up production of Mythago Wood, while Jamie would head a larger team in charge of another D-Mod. Needless to say, both projects disappeared quite quickly.

The Idea

The core idea was to use SimonK's Mog character graphics in some sort of wooded setting.

There were a few e-mails exchanged between our small group, which mainly focused on what sort of theme Mythago Wood should take:
ROUTE 1 : Spooky Forest

... So I was thinking, that to make the game a spooky one, we would need to have a new lantern graphic made, that allowed you to see a lot more, with pretty much the corners of the screen covered.

ROUTE 2 : Fantasy
This was how I originally envisaged Mythago Wood. It wouldn't be all dark and dreary, but quite mystical. It would be a forest inhabited by all sorts of mythical creatures, dragons, fairys, as well as other little critters.

Something is happening in the Wood, something is wrong (I'm not sure what yet...) and you as a Mog, feel it is your duty to save your home!

After some discussion, it was decided to create a mix of Fantasy and Spooky for super fantastic adventure. Woohoo, progress!

In an effort to aid communication, I created a private Mythago Wood group on Yahoo. The idea was that all of us would sign up, and have a central place to store our ideas, progress, files, and so on.

I sent a few useful (to me) scripts to my fellow team members, and created a few screenshots to show how huge trees could make Mythago Wood look quite unique.

Things looked like they were off to a good start in early August of 2003, when...

The Downfall

... nothing happened! After the Yahoo! group was created, nothing else was really discussed. Nobody seemed to be interested in further development, and without instruction from SabreTrout, no serious development took place.

In October, SabreTrout e-mailed us an apology for delays, and attached a party script that he thought we should use. That was pretty much a death knell to the whole project.

What Survived

Apparently, the party script lives on in Cloud Castle 2. Or perhaps it is a completely different party script.

The screenshots I made to demonstrate the giant trees also survived, and if we ever developed it to a playable form, I think you'd agree it would be special.
