New Contest: Alternative Hero D-Mod Romp (*Updated Rules*)

Are you interested in making D-Mods, but simply can't find the motivation to do it? Or are you quite good at making them, and want to find a new challenge? Tada, this Contest might help.

Basically, the goal of the contest is to make an Alternative Hero D-Mod. It also allows D-Mods to compete against D-Mods in a Contest, instead of battling everything in DOTM contests.

The Rules

Deadline: All entries must arrive at redink1@rpgplanet.com before September 13th, 2002, PST, and they will be put online later that day.

If you upload your entry to another public website before it is on The Dink Network, it is disqualified from the Contest.

Voting: Voting will start September 20th, and end September 27th. It will be done exactly like DOTM voting. By entering this contest, the D-Mod is disqualified from the normal DOTM award.

If there are less than 3 entries, the contest is basically cancelled, and the entries will be put into regular DOTM voting.

Prize: The 1st place winner gets a little Award icon next to their D-Mod in the Files listings.

Size: The D-Mod must be less than 600 KB zipped, and cannot use more than 60 screens. Blank, inaccessable screens are not counted toward the total.

Specifications: The main player character cannot be Dink Smallwood, and must be another character from the original game.

It is ok to use a modified character from the original game; for example, a Fire Bonca would be perfectly acceptable, or a Wizard who carries a sword. However, this doesn't apply to Dink, so Dead Dink wouldn't be ok.

It isn't ok to use other characters not based in the original game; for example, SimonK's Eyeball and Scorpion enemies are not ok for the main player character.

Dink can be in the game as a Non Player Character or enemy, but it isn't required.

Misc: If you have any questions, or think some of my rules are a bit silly, please post a comment or a message on the board.

Oh, and because there really isn't a prize, entries by Dink Network Staff (including me) are eligible.

If this goes well, there might be future themed D-Mod contests.

Updated Rules: August 14th: Previously released D-Mods are not eligible, nor any parts of their map and/or story. For example, Sharp couldn't take Milder 3 and reduce it to 60 screens for the contest. However, if you wanted to have a SOB scorpion as an enemy (or character) that is allowed.

The point of the Alternative Hero theme (and 60 screen limit) was to make it so people couldn't just submit a D-Mod they've been working on for months. So if have been working on a D-Mod that fits in the rules for a while, please start a new one.

Graphics from Mystery Island are allowed for the main character. But they might take quite a chunk out of the 600 KB zip limit.

Dink cannot be directly controlled by the player. You could have him follow the character (like Shryke does in POTA). But the player can't tell him where to move or when or what to attack and whatnot. You could set it up so Dink attacks on his own (again, like Shryke), and that would be fine.

Updated Rules: August 15th: You can use as many new graphics as you wish (as long as the D-Mod zip size is under 600 KB). You can have new tiles, Characters, Trees, anything. The only limitation is you can't have a brand-new main character.

Updated Rules: August 22nd: You can submit more than one entry. But beware: you may end up 'splitting the vote', and allowing another D-Mod to win, like the Green Party and Democrats vs the Republicans in the 2000 election.

The Player Character cannot be Dink, or use the Dink graphics. So the following would be invalid:

1) Dink gets turned into a pig, and you play as Dink the Pig.

2) Play as a character whose name is Phil or something, who uses the Dink graphics.

Also, if I don't login with my password, it is quite obvious that 'I' am an imposter.
