About the screen bug, DinkC ref. 3.1 says something like that will happen if you use show_bmp() with a bmp that isn't exactly 640 x 480. I can't find show_bmp() in your scripts but splash.bmp and title-01.bmp are both 800 x 600, try changing them to 640 x 480 and see if that fixes it.
