You feed the madness, and it feeds on you. 
I had this problem a while ago, this is what I did to fix it:

first, go into Start >> programs >> accessories >> entertainment >> volume control
and make sure that Master Volume, Wave, and SW Synth aren't muted or turned down.

If it still doesn't work:
go into control panel >> sounds and audio devices, click the audio tab and where it says 'MIDI music playback', under that, click the drop down arrow and if there is two options select the other one (the one that wasn't already selected). Click ok.

If that doesn't work than I'm not sure cause that's what i did to fix it and it worked for me.
