Reply to dvd / cd-rw problem

Here's the deal, my hp pavilion 1118x came with a dvd/cd-rw drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B). It plays CDs fine and writes CDs fine, but I recently discovered it won't read DVDs 
I got the Sim's 2 Deluxe game from my parents for my birthday and it obviously won't play because it's not being read (it's a DVD).
I honestly can't say if it ever played DVDs because we never tried until now. I know it's supposed to but it won't. Is there anything I can do to fix it outside of buying a new cd/dvd drive?
I checked the HP website and tried a firmware upgrade, but that didn't solve anything. I've also tried a normal DVD movie and that didn't work either. This sucks.
