dvd / cd-rw problem

Here's the deal, my hp pavilion 1118x came with a dvd/cd-rw drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B). It plays CDs fine and writes CDs fine, but I recently discovered it won't read DVDs I got the Sim's 2 Deluxe game from my parents for my birthday and it obviously won't play because it's not being read (it's a DVD).

I honestly can't say if it ever played DVDs because we never tried until now. I know it's supposed to but it won't. Is there anything I can do to fix it outside of buying a new cd/dvd drive?

I checked the HP website and tried a firmware upgrade, but that didn't solve anything. I've also tried a normal DVD movie and that didn't work either. This sucks.

Everyone should get a pizza for free in each week.
Maybe you were cheated or you have a broken.Go to the nearest Computer Shop to solve the problem.

I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to.I guess.
You might need to send it in for warranty work.

I think our warranty has expired (we've had the thing for more than two years already) Which is really ducked up since it probably never worked to begin with and just because we never noticed means we're gonna get screwed over. I can tell it's gonna be awhile before I can play my game

No region has been selected, could that be a problem?

Edit: I changed it to United states but that didn't do anything either.

Edit 2: Just found out our warranty IS still valid, it turns out we got 3 years instead of 2. We're taking it in later this week so everything should be all good.

i think you should'nt change the region if its not selected..
because once my friend tried that many times and had his DVD rom Replaced.. so i dont think it would be a prob with the Region.. you better not playwith the region now for sure...

i think you could use an Internet guide for That or ask a computer expert about that..

And I never asked for yours, so we're even now

EDIT: I realise that that comment was a bit rude, and doesn't really help this conversation any further. I shall explain why, so people can see my point of view and may or may not try to understand it. Nobody may have asked for this, but I do it anyway. Consider it charity, if you want to.

In other words, I reacted because your behaviour pissed me off a bit. Mind you, I'm not sleeping nearly enough, so a lot of things piss me off. I get the feeling that I should be explaining why I'm pissed off. I'm not saying you should change your behaviour... anyway.

rabidwolf9 comes in with some DVD player issue.
People come with all kinds of suggestions about warranty and region.
You mention that you shouldn't change the region too often.
undink1 says that he should go to a computer expert concerning this DVD player issue.
You say that you are a computer expert, and some needless details about your age.
You proceed to give no advice on what to do to solve it.

Mind you, saying that you are a computer is not a problem. However, I'm a guy who has to see it first, before he believes it. People claim the weirdest things online, and moreover, a computer expert in one field (for example: servers) may not know anything about something else (for example: DVD players).

I don't care about your age, but if you claim that you know a heck of a lot about computers and then don't share any of that knowledge to people who are in need of it, that pisses me off, and hence this (and my previous) reply.

No hard feelings, by the way. I just had to get this out.
