What's supposed to happpen is:
You fight Mog, he tells you where the Cast camp is.
Cutscene: You sneak into camp steal a scroll and get caught in the woods by Cast members. You fight the cast members and leave to tell the mayor.
Screen's not supposed to go dark...
Like the wolf said you might want to check your version, or get really good at fighting blind
