I'm in one now and it's good. Sure you have to deal with the long distance thing if they aren't near you, but that's okay. If you are planning on doing it, might I suggest getting pictures first 
I got lucky with mine, but a lot of other people on my buddy list were fugly. Lol. I don't think I've come across any bad people yet. And just for the record, I've met my girlfriend, and she is not some 80 year old man who wants to rape me. All in all, the internet is a good way to meet cool people, but background checks are always good just to be safe. As with all the bad people...I've yet to come across any on my ventures. As said, they do require lots of work. Also commitment, and especially trust, but they can in fact work out and make you happy.
