Totally awesome. Particularly the beauty of the descriptions. Did you write it redink? You didn't say. The story itself is impressive.
It's tight, says everything it needs to, has a concise and intriguing beginning and middle, and ends with a disquieting questioning kick to the gut, and last but not least, leaves it up to the reader to make his/her own interpretation. I like. A+
Do I actually like the story? A resounding yes........ and no.
This is the yes part:
Leaves me with the sorrowful feeling of words of truth. There really is a David and Jess out there hurting, mutilating each other to cover their burning descent into hell. Why? Atonement? maybe. Deserved (in their own eyes)Abasement? Certainly could be. Rage at injustice in their life? A strong possibility. Extreme pain at events beyond their control? Also a possibility. Hopelessness? Helplessness? More reasons than can be counted. So many possibilities, so many unknowns. All cheerless and grim.
Makes the heart ache for them And the destuctiveness of their lives. Powerful!
The No part: (1)Jess and David simply like it and (2)use it to control their sphere of life, Ex: If you make me mad I'll cut off a finger and it'll be your fault, And (3)Don't worry or plan for the future. It's all crap anyway.
Mutilating is great fun and cures all ills.
Leaves an unclean feeling. Could this aspect of the story convince a person who has contemplated mutilation or sadomasochism or enforce the feeling of control of the person who has already done the deed to feel they are a stronger or better person if they just slice a little now and then or break a bone ocassionally. Will they end up committing suicide 10, 20, 30 years down the road? Murder someone?
Kick ass story redink. I hate you.
