Yeah, that part is a bit confusing.
First, the pig food that Dink can pick up is actually inside the house. Copy-and-paste this url to see exactly where: http://www.dinknetwork.com/images/pigfood.gif
Just walk over it to pick it up.
Then, to equip it, press Enter, move the flashing box over the pig food, and press Ctrl. Press Enter again to exit the inventory screen.
Now, when you press Ctrl, Dink should start feeding the pigs.
