My art teacher says that you are generally trying to create "balance," in one of two ways:

1.Symmetry
2.Asymmetry

So, if you have something which really stands out in the top right corner, you should try putting something similar looking in the bottom right corner (symmetry) or something different which also stands out on the bottom or left side (asymmetry).

Beyond that, you should try to create a "theme". Don't have rocks, trees, bushes, grass, cracks, sticks, mushrooms, flowers and rump hair on every screen. Instead, have one area with screens that have rocks and bushes, and another area with cracks, sticks and mushrooms.

Finally, vary the background. It is much easier and better looking than putting a lot of sprites on the screen.
