Why would it be psychotic? I did that very thing, clearing all of the editor type information, with my Mayhem High Score hack I released a while ago (search the board).
All it takes is a few loops.
A sprite changed on map 1 would be changed on the corresponding screen in map 2, yes.
I think Wesley bypassed most of the issues because he didn't have too many barrels/boxes/etc around.
