I have kept up with every little bit of gaming news for years and years, and do not remember Japanese RPGs ever being labeled as "traditional."
Edit: Hm. A good Googling seems to imply that the console RPG style is in fact referred to as "traditional." Why this is, or why I never really caught that, I don't know.
