fstab doesn't show the contents of the hard drive. fstab keeps a list on how to mount various partitions in case the user needs them. And mtab keeps a list of the currently mounted partitions, but that's still different.
Oh, and you're right about not everyone spending hours upon hours doing research about the different virii and how to stop them; I don't.
