Wow. Freakish. I'm 'pro' those kinds of punishments. In a previous more personal age, if you accidentally killed someone you'd be indepted to their relatives until they saw fit to release you. I think that is a more humanizing form of punishment than sticking someone in jail or fining them. It's more personal and brings the point home.
