So, all it has to do is to calculate the sum of the numbers, see if it's less or more than 9. If less, then the number is 9-[given numbers]. If more, then the number is 18-[given numbers].
Using your figures of :
1234 jumble
4321
4321 - 1234 = 3087
3087 = 3 + 0 + 8 + 7 = 18 (= 2*9
The next step is pick a number other than zero. Say I pick =7
How does it calculate to get the number 7 that I chose?

Does everyone know that whatever 9 is multiplied by, the answer will be a combination totaling 9(s)
