Whilst thousands may die everyday due to other causes, 9/11 was not just a day where many, many died, but one of the U.S's monuments, almost an institution, was destroyed.
As EatTheRats points out, it's the effect as a whole... the Twin Towers is a large part of American culture, if you will, and it's destruction was a catastrophe.
Like if David Beckham was shot in England. He is more popular than royalty.
