I told him how nervous people are (rightly so) and explained that destruction, killing, bombing, etc. in schools are not subjects that you can joke about. It's something that needs to be reported to the proper people.
More people die every year thanks to bike riding without a helmet than school shootings. Should jokes about those unfortunate people be grounds for suspension as well? What if I say 'I wish so-and-so teacher would die!'. What if I just think it?
This 'zero tolerance' (where joking about a gun, bringing in a butter knife, etc. is grounds for suspension/expulsion) is 'zero thought' on part of the school administration. They want to act like they have things under control, but they know that if someone was determined enough, there would be *no* reasonable way to stop it. Metal detectors don't work... the kids have to get out of the school eventually. Maybe they could buy full body armor suits for each child... but their lives aren't worth that much, as people would definately protest a tax increase of that magnitude, not to mention the difficulties it would cause in the classrooms/hallways.
I mean, this principal sounds silly. "The principal said he knew that it was a joke". So why was your son suspended?
